The Restorative Effects of Deep Relaxation

It has been shown that being in a state of deep relaxation is a great way to counteract stress and the automatic negative thoughts that tend to run continuously through people’s minds. Thomas Edison was an early believer in the benefits of being in deep relaxation and he credited it with being the catalyst for many of his ideas. If it is good enough for Edison, then it is good enough for me.

Edison trained himself by relaxing in his armchair in front of a nice warm fire. He apparently held a large object whilst he was relaxing. If he fell asleep, the object dropped on the floor causing him to wake up. He did this repeatedly until he could hold that desired mental state of deep relaxation.

Personally, I am nowhere good enough to even be in danger of falling asleep while practicing. My mind only stays free of negative thoughts for a few minutes at a time.
